BROWN EARTH
Sculpture

Annalivia came late to sculpture, studying at the Sir John Cass school of Art in Whitechapel for a part time diploma in Sculpture for three years including a course in bronze casting. Working mainly in clay and sometimes plaster while at the college, she started to carve in stone after attending a summer course taught by the Japanese sculptor, Hideo Furuta. Further courses at the Portland Sculpture Trust on the Isle of Portland followed and the experience of actually carving in the quarry from which the stone had come influenced the direction her work took once moving to Scotland, where she started to make pieces for the garden.
Most of the work is now figurative, but some of the work involves the use of slate pieces to construct the “slate plants” which can be seen on the website and the first piece of carving completed after arriving in Scotland is a Cairn, made of different pieces of carved granite, piled in a cairn shape in the garden.
Working in stone requires a different mind set from other disciplines. Firstly, it is a much slower process so that the mind has to shift into a slower gear; secondly it involves the taking away of material in order to achieve the desired shape as opposed to the adding of clay and so on to build up the object. When it is going well, stone carving can become quite contemplative.
Although Annalivia prefers to work in stone, she still does use other mediums: for example, at present she is working on a wax heron for a client, which will be cast into bronze . Annalivia will consider any commission for garden sculpture and undertakes portraiture both sculptural and 2 dimensional.
